01 · Historical Record

The historical record.

Civil rights organizer Fannie Lou Hamer launched the Freedom Farm Cooperative in Mississippi in 1969. As documented by the Smithsonian, she connected the pursuit of political power with economic opportunity, food and the ability of communities to support themselves.

The cooperative brought shared agricultural resources into that work. Hamer’s example challenges a narrow understanding of freedom: the ability to participate in public life also depends on the material conditions of daily life.

02 · The T&T Principle

Land.

In our framework, land is more than scenery or acreage. It is a place to grow food, develop skills and build lasting economic participation. The central questions are access, stewardship and whether the people doing the work have a fair opportunity to benefit.

For mountain agriculture, that means connecting production opportunities with practical training and a plan for reaching customers. Land access alone is not a complete agricultural economy — but an agricultural economy cannot be built without it.

A Question to Carry Forward

Who has the knowledge to farm, but lacks the land or resources to begin?
